ICON ERA BOHO

In reinventing iconic styles from some of the most influential eras, we have given a modern twist to the most classic of all styles, the 70s inspired Bohemian beauty. With soft beachy waves and a glowing natural complexion, the new face of ghd - Katy Perry, encapsulates this enchanting look with radiant inner confidence.

Step 1
Select a centre parting using the ghd Tail Comb. Starting just above the ear take a diagonal section and clip away any excess hair.

Step 2
Place the ghd Gold Classic styler at the root of the hair. Rotate the styler 180 degrees and glide the styler through to the ends to create a curl. Repeat steps 1 and 2 throughout the entire head of hair.

Step 3
For the natural Boho look, run your fingers through the hair from root to tip to loosen the movement.

Step 4
Using your thumbs, make a parting from the temples to the crown and clip the hair up and out of the way.

Step 5
Take a one inch section above the ear, plait to the ends and secure with a clear band. Repeat on the other side if two plaits are desired.

Step 6
Place the plaits across the forehead and secure in the hair with a small hairpin. Release the clip and allow the hair to fall freely over the plait. Apply hairspray for extra hold.

The Perfect Shave

You’ll shave around 20,000 times in your life so how about learning to do it properly? Given the overwhelming array of shaving products available to the modern man (coupled with the contradictory, mythical and just plain stupid information circulating about hair growth) it’s no wonder most guys are still abiding by the antiquated shaving techniques they learned from their dad (who, incidentally, now has skin like a well-worn sofa). All is not lost, though. Follow our step-by-step guide to the perfect wet shave.

Step 1.
A close shave is all in the preparation: Avoid shaving as soon as you’ve woken up as a puffy morning face will make the task that little bit more difficult (not to mention dangerous when you’re half-awake). Wait until your mug has deflated and then take a hot towel, shower or steam to help open pores and soften your beard. A light scrub with a good exfoliator will also help shed any dead skin cells and dirt festering away on your skin – the smoother the ‘landscape’ of your jawline, the less chance there is your razor will drag and cause irritation.

Step 2.
If you’ve got a really thick beard, invest in a pre-shave oil before applying your actual shaving product. This will help with glide and, again, reduce the likelihood of accidentally slicing up your face. If you use a traditional shaving cream, then apply a thick lather with a badger brush in a large circular motion. This isn’t just for dandyish effect; the brush will actually help lift hairs, making them easier to cut. If you’re more low maintenance and use foam from a can, make sure you’ve not picked up a mentholated formula that will actually close pores (even though that ‘zingy’ feeling suggests that the product is working).

Step 3.
Now for the blade. Most modern blades should last an average of one week but this will vary depending on how much resistance it’s had to tackle. If the lubricating strip has faded or you notice even the slightest bit of drag at the beginning of your shave, bin it and start again with a fresh blade.

Step 4.
Before the blade touches your face, pull the skin on the area you’re about to tackle as taut as possible with one hand. Then take the razor and move in a continuous smooth line, following the direction of the hair growth. Do not make the common mistake of using short, sharp strokes over the same patch, as you’ll only increase the risk of post-shave irritation. If you do need to go over the same patch again – and most of us will – the important thing to do is re-lather: never let a blade touch your skin without adequate lubrication.

Step 5.
As for that old myth about shaving against the grain, it’s actually fine to do so provided you’ve taken the right precautions. If you’re going in the opposite direction of the hair growth to get a closer finish, make sure you’ve shaved with the grain first. And, again, remember to re-lather over the area in question.

Step 6.
Most guys instinctively douse themselves in an alcohol-based product – or worse yet, a fragrance – as soon as they’re done. The burning sensation might make you think you’re doing good (or even ‘disinfecting’ the area) but it’s actually just drying out your skin even further. Use an alcohol free post-shave balm to help calm and repair the damage done by daily shaving. The best thing you can do for your skin after a shave is help re-hydrate it. Try American Crew Post-Shave Cooling Lotion
